A Future-focused vision,
inspired by the local history
The RIVUS project is born in an area with a long-standing history and that is closely linked to the development of Cluj-Napoca City. Before becoming an important industrial center, the area was known as the “Meadowland Garden” (“Grădina de Fânețe” / “Szénáskert”), a name that evokes a pastoral image, in stark contrast with the industrial landscape that would take over.
In the early 20th century, as industry was developing in Cluj, the area started to transform. In 1949, Carbochim was established and would later become the largest manufacturer of professional abrasives in Romania.
The communist era ushered in a period of rapid industrial development in the area, as well as a series of major urban planning changes via new buildings, streets, and infrastructure. The industrial development had a major impact on the environment and the quality of life of residents in the area. The urban landscape was dominated by industrial buildings and infrastructure, with limited green spaces.
After 1990, with the political and economic changes in Romania, the area entered a period of decline.
A new beginning for an iconic area
In 2020, Iulius Group acquires the majority shareholding of Carbochim, nurturing an ambitious vision: to give a new meaning to this iconic area and to transform it into a community attraction hub. A 5 million Euro investment enabled the upgrade and relocation of the factory into a modern industrial area, making way for the innovative RIVUS project.
An invitation to transform
The former factory site now accommodates the development of RIVUS, a project that will breathe new life into the city. While honoring the history of the place, we will preserve, rehabilitate, and truly showcase the local heritage buildings, transforming them into a vibrant cultural center supporting local initiatives. In RIVUS, we will honor the industrial memory of the area and build a sustainable and long-lasting future for Cluj-Napoca.
